From the sun-drenched Costa del Sol to the snow-capped Pyrenees, this captivating country offers a kaleidoscope of experiences for every type of adventurer. Here are the best times to travel to Spain!
Spain’s diverse climate and varied regions mean there’s always somewhere fantastic to explore, no matter when you visit. However, certain times of year can offer unique experiences and advantages. So from my experiences of Spain I’ve broken it month by month to help you find your ideal Spanish adventure!
Visiting Spain in January - February
Winter in Spain! While it might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of this sunny paradise, these cooler months have their own special magic and in my opinion can be some of the best months to visit.
- Winter wonderland: Fancy hitting the slopes? Head to the Sierra Nevada in Andalusia or the Pyrenees in the north for some world-class skiing and snowboarding. The pristine white slopes against the backdrop of blue skies are simply breathtaking.
- Carnival celebrations: February brings the vibrant Carnival season. Cities like Cadiz and Tenerife burst into life with parades, costumes, and street parties that’ll have you dancing till dawn.
- Crowd-free cultural experiences: With fewer tourists around, it’s the perfect time to explore Spain’s incredible museums and historic sites without the queues. Imagine having the Prado in Madrid or the Alhambra in Granada almost to yourself!
- Budget-friendly: As it’s off-season, you’ll find great deals on flights and accommodation. More pesetas in your pocket means more tapas on your plate!
However, do pack a warm coat and be prepared for some rain, especially in the north. Many coastal resorts may be quieter, with some businesses closed for the season.

Visiting Spain in March - April
As winter bids farewell, Spain starts to bloom, making spring a delightful time to visit and I feel it is probably the sweet spot to visit.
- Holy Week spectacle: Semana Santa (Holy Week) usually falls in late March or early April, bringing solemn processions and festive celebrations across the country. Seville’s elaborate parades are particularly renowned.
- Blossoming beauty: The countryside comes alive with wildflowers, making it an ideal time for hiking and nature photography. The cherry blossoms in Jerte Valley, Extremadura, create a stunning pink canopy.
- Pleasant temperatures: Spring offers comfortable weather for sightseeing, with temperatures warming up but not yet reaching the scorching heights of summer.
- Fewer crowds: While busier than winter, spring still offers a nice balance between good weather and manageable tourist numbers.
Keep in mind that Easter is a popular time for domestic travel, so book accommodation in advance. Also, pack layers as the weather can be unpredictable, especially in northern regions.

Visiting Spain in May - August
Summer brings Spain’s famous sunshine and a buzzing atmosphere across the country. For obvious reasons, this is the most popular time to go if you want the heat!
- Beach bliss: With over 5,000 miles of coastline, Spain’s beaches come into their own during summer. From the Costa Brava’s hidden coves to Ibiza’s party shores, there’s a perfect stretch of sand for everyone.
- Festival frenzy: Summer is prime time for Spain’s world-famous festivals. Don’t miss the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona (July) or La Tomatina tomato fight in Buñol (August).
- Long, sun-soaked days: With daylight stretching late into the evening, summer gives you more time to explore and soak up the Spanish lifestyle. Embrace the siesta culture to beat the midday heat!
- Island escapes: The Balearic and Canary Islands are at their most appealing, offering a perfect blend of beach relaxation and vibrant nightlife.
However, be prepared for crowds and higher prices, especially in August when many Europeans take their holidays. Temperatures can soar, particularly in inland cities like Seville and Madrid, so plan outdoor activities for mornings or evenings.
Travel Tips for your consideration:
Visiting Spain in September - October
As summer’s heat mellows, autumn brings a golden glow to Spain, offering perhaps the best overall travel experience. A bit like spring, I think this could also b the sweet spot to enjoy Spain without the crowds and the boiling heat!
- Perfect climate: Temperatures cool to a comfortable level, ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The Mediterranean is still warm enough for swimming well into October.
- Grape expectations: It’s wine harvest season! Regions like La Rioja and Ribera del Duero come alive with grape-picking activities and festivals. Raise a glass to the good life!
- Cultural cornucopia: The cultural calendar kicks into high gear with events like the San Mateo Wine Harvest Festival in Logroño and the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
- Autumn colours: Northern regions like Asturias and the Pyrenees put on a spectacular show as forests turn to shades of gold and red.
- Manageable crowds: With schools back in session, you’ll find fewer tourists at major attractions and more availability in restaurants and hotels.
Bear in mind that while early autumn is generally dry, late October can bring more frequent rain, especially in the north.
Visiting Spain in November – December
As the year winds down, Spain offers a cosy, festive atmosphere that’s perfect for those seeking a different kind of Spanish experience.
- Christmas markets: From late November, cities across Spain light up with charming Christmas markets. Barcelona’s Fira de Santa Llúcia and Madrid’s Plaza Mayor market are particularly magical.
- Skiing season begins: By late November, ski resorts in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada start to open, offering a unique blend of winter sports and Spanish culture.
- Comfort food heaven: Cooler weather means it’s the perfect time to indulge in hearty Spanish dishes like cocido madrileño (Madrid-style stew) or fabada asturiana (Asturian bean stew).
- New Year’s Eve spectacle: If you’re around for New Year’s Eve, join the locals in eating twelve grapes at midnight for good luck. Madrid’s Puerta del Sol is the place to be for a truly unforgettable celebration.
- Bargain hunting: With fewer tourists around, you can snag some great deals on accommodations and flights.
Do pack warm clothes and be prepared for rain, especially in the north. Some coastal resorts may be very quiet, with limited options for dining and entertainment.
