Brief Overview

Ghent Belgium's Top 10
Ghent Belgium

Ghent’s history is as rich as its Belgian chocolate. Once a powerful medieval city, it was a major centre for trade and textiles. Today, it’s a vibrant university town with a youthful energy, yet it retains its historic charm. The city’s compact centre makes it easy to explore on foot, and you’ll be constantly rewarded with stunning views of canals, cathedrals, and castles.

Ghent, is often overshadowed by its more famous Belgian counterparts, is a city that surprised and delighted me. It’s a place where history and modernity blend seamlessly, where medieval architecture stands proudly alongside trendy bars and innovative restaurants.

Things to See and Do in Ghent

Ghent is packed with attractions, but here are a few of my must-sees:

Gravensteen Castle

Historic city of Ghent
Historic city of Ghent - Gravensteen Castle

This imposing medieval fortress is like something out of a Game of Thrones episode. You can explore the ramparts, climb the towers, and even visit the torture museum (if you dare!). When I was there, I felt like a character in a historical novel, imagining knights and ladies strolling through the castle grounds. It’s probably one of the best preserved castles I’ve ever stepped foot in! Also don’t forget to have the audio guide, it’s comical! Find tickets and more information here.

Go on a Boat Tour

A boat tour along the canals is the best way to see Ghent. You’ll glide past medieval buildings, under picturesque bridges, and through the heart of the city. It’s a relaxing and informative way to get your bearings and admire Ghent’s unique architecture.

Visit Saint Bavo’s Cathedral

This magnificent Gothic cathedral houses a true masterpiece: the Ghent Altarpiece. This 15th-century polyptych is a stunning work of art that depicts biblical scenes in vivid detail. I remember standing in awe of its intricate beauty, feeling a sense of reverence for the artists who created it.

Go up the Belfry of Ghent

For breathtaking panoramic views of the city, climb to the top of the Belfry of Ghent. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a symbol of the city’s power and prosperity. The climb is a bit of a workout, but the reward at the top is worth every step.

Best Time to Visit Ghent

Ghent is a year-round destination, but for me, the best time to visit is during the spring or autumn. The weather is pleasant, and the city is less crowded than in the peak summer months. The Ghent Festivities in July is a 10-day extravaganza of music, theatre, and street performances. The Ghent Light Festival (held every three years) is a visual feast that transforms the city into a magical wonderland.
