I still can’t get over the magic of Lapland, the mystical home of Santa Claus. Having experienced it firsthand, I can confidently say that it’s a winter wonderland like no other. Tucked away in the northernmost region of Finland, Lapland is a destination that will leave you enchanted and eager for more.
One of the highlights of my trip was witnessing the breathtaking display of the Northern Lights. I remember gazing up at the swirling, iridescent colours of the aurora borealis painting the pitch-black sky, it was truly one of the most staggering natural wonders I’ve ever seen. And what made the experience even more special was visiting Santa’s Village in Rovaniemi. I met Santa Claus himself, sent postcards from his official post office, and even crossed the Arctic Circle line, it was like stepping straight into a Christmas card!

Vienna, Austria’s grand imperial capital, is a city that wears its rich history with pride. Come December, this regal city undergoes a magical transformation, with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and the sweet aroma of seasonal treats filling the air. It really is spectacular!
Christmas Markets and Musical Shows
Vienna’s Christmas markets, known as ‘Christkindlmarkt’, are legendary. Dating back centuries, these markets are scattered throughout the city, each offering its unique charm. Imagine warming your hands with a mug of glühwein (mulled wine) or nibbling on freshly made Lebkuchen (gingerbread) as you wander through stalls brimming with handcrafted gifts, ornaments, and festive treats. Perfect to me! But what truly sets Vienna apart is its deep-rooted musical legacy. The city of Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss, Vienna’s concert halls and opera houses come alive with special Christmas concerts. Fancy a waltz? The sound of music echoes through the city streets, inviting you to immerse yourself in Vienna’s rich musical heritage.
Historical Attractions
But the festivities don’t end there. Vienna’s historical attractions, from the majestic Schönbrunn Palace with its glittering Christmas market to the Belvedere Palace illuminated in festive lights, offer a unique blend of history and festivity. The Hofburg Palace, once the winter residence of the Habsburgs, now houses the Austrian National Library, the imperial apartments, and various museums, all of which take on special significance during the festive season. One of the most magical experiences from my experience in New York City during Christmas is a visit to the Rockefeller Center. 4. Strasbourg, France
Strasbourg, affectionately known as the “Capital of Christmas”, is a mesmerising French town that seems to leap out of a classic Christmas tale. With its captivating medieval architecture and timeless traditions, Strasbourg offers a Christmas experience that is both enchanting and steeped in history. Trust me, you will love it.
Capital of Christmas
The title of “Capital of Christmas” is no casual moniker, Strasbourg earns it with every snowflake that graces its charming, timber-framed houses. The town is famous for hosting some of Europe’s oldest and most beautiful Christmas markets. The Christkindelsmärik, established in 1570, is a testament to Strasbourg’s enduring Christmas legacy. Wander through the market, and you’ll find yourself enveloped in the warmth of twinkling lights and the intoxicating scent of cinnamon and mulled wine, with stalls offering an array of handcrafted treasures, festive ornaments, and traditional Alsatian treats.
River Cruises and Old Town Explorations
But the beauty of Strasbourg isn’t confined to its markets. The town itself, with its network of canals and striking half-timbered houses, is a wonder to explore. A river cruise offers a romantic and serene perspective of this enchanting town, allowing visitors to soak in its architectural and natural beauty from the water. 5. Nuremberg, Germany
Nuremberg, a picturesque city in Bavaria, and one of my favourite places to visit, transports its visitors into a yesteryear world of medieval charm, especially during the Christmas season. With its majestic castle, ancient walls, and cobbled streets, the city exudes a timeless aura that gets beautifully accentuated with festive adornments.
The Gingerbread City
One of the culinary highlights of Nuremberg is undoubtedly its legendary gingerbread or “Lebkuchen”. Steeped in centuries-old traditions, Nuremberg’s gingerbread is a delightful medley of almonds, honey, and spices, all coming together to create a treat that tantalises the taste buds. Whether adorned with chocolate, covered in sugar glaze, or left plain to showcase its spicy undertones, have you ever encountered a gingerbread that encapsulates the very essence of Christmas quite like it?
Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt
In the heart of the Old Town, set against the backdrop of the Church of Our Lady, the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is one of the world’s most revered Christmas markets. Established in the 16th century, this festive marketplace beckons visitors with its shimmering lights, wooden stalls, and the distinct aroma of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. From traditional Christmas ornaments and crafts to a plethora of gastronomic delights, it’s truly a spectacle that captures the spirit of the season. A special mention must go to the “Nuremberg Plum People”, tiny figures made of prunes, which are among the unique treasures you can find in this historical market.
What to know How to Plan or Save for a Trip? Here are our best:
6. Reykjavik, Iceland
Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland, offers a Christmas experience that’s dramatically different from most. Imagine celebrating the festive season where the landscapes oscillate between volcanic terrains, geothermal lagoons, and ice caves. It’s a Nordic Christmas tale with an exhilarating twist.
Geothermal Spas and Ice Caves
The very thought of dipping into a warm geothermal spa amidst the cold Icelandic winter is enough to evoke a sense of unparalleled relaxation. The Blue Lagoon, with its milky blue waters rich in minerals, promises a rejuvenating experience, especially when the surrounding landscapes are blanketed in snow. And if that’s not adventurous enough, how about exploring the awe-inspiring ice caves? Venturing inside these frozen wonders, with their ethereal blue hues, offers a surreal experience that contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the geothermal spas.
Traditional Icelandic Yule Lads
Forget the solitary Santa Claus; in Iceland, the festive season is celebrated with not one but thirteen mischievous Yule Lads. These folklore figures, each with their own quirks, come down from the mountains to either reward or play tricks on the children. From “Door Slammer” who loves to make noise, to “Sausage Swiper” who can’t resist stealing sausages, these characters add a playful and unique dimension to Iceland’s Christmas celebrations. So, are these Yule Lads mere tales spun by imaginative minds, or do they truly roam the streets of Reykjavik during Christmas? Well, isn’t the mystery part of the charm?
7. Quebec City, Canada
Nestled on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, Quebec City is a slice of old Europe in the heart of North America. Renowned for its distinct French heritage, this Canadian gem glistens even brighter during the festive season, blending its European allure with the serene charm of a white Christmas.
A French Fairytale
As the only fortified city north of Mexico, Quebec City boasts a rich tapestry of history, encapsulated within its walls. When winter descends, the city transforms, with snow-laden rooftops and twinkling fairy lights, creating scenes reminiscent of classic French fairytales. The iconic Château Frontenac stands majestically overlooking the city, its turrets and spires blanketed by snow, evoking images of enchanted castles from timeless tales.
The Magic of Old Quebec
Venture into Old Quebec, and you’re transported into a winter wonderland. The winding cobblestone streets, framed by historic buildings, are the epitome of romantic charm. Every corner of Place Royale and Petit Champlain seems to narrate tales of yore, especially when adorned with Christmas decorations. The festive spirit is palpable, with carolers serenading passersby, and the scent of roasted chestnuts wafting through the chilly air. It’s a delightful blend of old-world charm and festive cheer.

8. Prague, Czech Republic
A city where the pages of history come to life, Prague, with its red rooftops and winding Vltava River, is a testament to architectural and cultural splendour. Especially during Christmas, the city’s Gothic and Baroque beauty gets accentuated with a festive overlay, promising visitors a magical experience.
Gothic and Baroque Spectacles
Prague’s skyline is punctuated by spires, towers, and domes, offering a visual feast of Gothic and Baroque architecture. Noteworthy is the iconic Prague Castle, which stands as a sentinel of history, and the Gothic masterpiece, St. Vitus Cathedral. When lit up for Christmas, these architectural wonders cast an ethereal glow, making the city seem straight out of a Gothic romance. The Charles Bridge, with its statues and lamp posts draped in snow, offers a picturesque view, especially at dusk with the backdrop of the setting sun.
Christmas Feasts and Traditions
Czech Christmas traditions are steeped in rich customs and delectable feasts. Central to their festive meal is the traditional carp, often bought alive and kept in bathtubs before being cooked. Paired with it are dishes like potato salad and svíčková (marinated beef). But the true highlight for those with a sweet tooth is the array of pastries and desserts. From the poppy-seed filled ‘kolač’ to the sweet bread ‘vánočka’, Prague ensures that your festive season is filled with culinary delights. The city squares, especially the Old Town Square, come alive with Christmas markets, offering everything from handcrafted gifts to mulled wine, capturing the essence of Czech Yuletide traditions.

The reflection of the illuminated buildings on the still canals adds to the town’s magical ambience.
The Hungarian capital is famed for its thermal baths, and during Christmas, these become even more special.
