Accommodations on a Dime

We all know the biggest expense of any trip is where you sleep! I will always recommend Hostels if you’re on a budget because they are ridiculously cheap!

Hostels: The Budget Traveler’s Haven

When I was travelling through Europe, hostels were my go-to for comfortable and affordable stays (cheapest place you can rest your head). Austria has a fantastic network of hostels, offering dorm beds as well as private rooms at wallet-friendly prices. They often have fun social atmospheres and great communal kitchens. Just remember the ear plugs!

Couchsurfing: Explore Austrian Hospitality

For a truly local and immersive experience, Couchsurfing connects you with friendly Austrians willing to offer a spare couch or room. It’s a fantastic way to save on accommodation and make new friends.

Guesthouses and Pensions: Charm and Affordability

Scattered across Austria, you’ll find charming family-run guesthouses and pensions. These offer cozy rooms, traditional hospitality, and often include breakfast, making them a great value for budget travellers. We recommend using AirBnB for this!

Picnic Delights: Markets and Supermarkets

One of my joys in Austria is visiting bustling farmers’ markets for fresh produce, cheeses, and local delicacies. The Karmelitermarket is one of Vienna’s oldest farmers’ markets! Pair your finds with fresh bread from a bakery for a delightful (and budget-friendly!) picnic in a scenic park or by a lake. Supermarkets are also great for stocking up on snacks and essentials.

Street Food Adventures

Forget fancy restaurants, Austria has a delicious street food scene! Grab a traditional Wiener Würstel (sausage) at a Würstelstand, a hearty Bosna (spiced sausage with onions), or sweet treats like Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes). Where to find the best street food in Vienna!

Self-Catering: Your Kitchen Away from Home

Everybody knows that making your own food is the cheapest option of the lot! If you’re staying in a hostel, guesthouse, or apartment with a kitchen, cooking some of your meals is a major money saver. Stock up at supermarkets and whip up a simple pasta dish or a hearty Austrian stew.

Getting Around Austria on the Cheap

OBB (Austrian Federal Railways)
OBB (Austrian Federal Railways)

All Aboard the Scenic Train!

Austria’s got a super efficient train system that can whisk you to pretty much anywhere. and it is by far the best way to get around the country! My tip is to check out regional trains, they’re often way cheaper than the fancy high-speed ones and sometimes meander through the most gorgeous countryside. If you’re planning on being a train-hopping fanatic, look into rail passes like the ÖBB Vorteilscard, which can score you some sweet discounts.

Walk This Way (or Pedal!)

So many charming towns and cities in Austria are perfectly walkable. I love strolling through cobblestone streets, discovering hidden alleys, and soaking up the atmosphere without spending a dime on transport. Plus, it’s a great way to work off all those schnitzels! Many places also have bike rentals, which are an awesome (and super affordable) way to get a bit more adventurous and explore the surrounding areas. Don’t forget to make use of a FREE walking tour, just tip at the end!

Other Ways to Budget Austria

Travel during the shoulder season: Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and often lower prices for accommodation and activities. You might even stumble upon special off-season deals.

Book in advance: Planning ahead can lead to significant savings. Book your flights, train tickets, and accommodation as early as possible for better rates and availability, especially if you’re traveling during peak seasons or holidays.

Take advantage of freebies: Austria is full of fantastic free experiences! Check out local websites and tourism boards for free walking tours, concerts, outdoor movie screenings, and other events.

Consider a city card: If you’ll be spending a few days in Vienna, Salzburg, or other major cities, a city card can be a lifesaver. They often include free public transport, museum entry, and discounts on attractions, easily offsetting the initial cost.

Learn a few German phrases: While many Austrians speak English, knowing some basic greetings and phrases like “Danke” (thank you) and “Bitte” (please) helps break the ice and can add to an authentic travel experience.

Pack light: Stick to carry-on luggage if possible to avoid those pesky airline baggage fees. This also makes getting around much easier, especially if you’re hopping between different locations by train.

Embrace the outdoors: Austria’s natural beauty is its biggest drawcard, and spending time hiking, picnicking by lakes, or exploring parks is a fantastic (and free!) way to experience the country.

Be flexible: One of the best ways to budget well is to stay flexible. Be open to off-the-beaten-path destinations, lesser-known guesthouses, or traveling on less popular days. You might end up with unexpected and even better experiences!

Tipping in Austria is customary, though not as high as in countries like the US. Rounding up the bill to the nearest euro or adding 5 – 10% to the bill is typical, especially for good service. In bars and cafes, rounding up to the nearest euro for small amounts is common practice. Always check the bill to see if service is included (‘bedienung’). If it is, a small additional tip is appreciated but not necessary.
