Things to See and Do in Zadar

Zadar is packed with fascinating sights and experiences. Here are some of the must-visit attractions in my opinion:

Zadar Cathedral

Known as the Cathedral of St. Anastasia, this imposing Romanesque structure is the largest cathedral in Dalmatia. Its intricate facade, adorned with sculptures and reliefs, is a testament to its rich history. Inside, you’ll find beautiful stained-glass windows and a peaceful atmosphere.

The Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun

These two unique installations are Zadar’s most iconic attractions. The Sea Organ, located on the waterfront, is an architectural marvel that harnesses the power of the waves to create haunting melodies. The Greeting to the Sun, a large solar-powered circle, lights up the night with a mesmerising display of colours.

The Roman Forum

Step back in time as you explore the remains of the Roman Forum, the heart of ancient Zadar. Here, you’ll find fragments of columns, temples, and other structures that offer a glimpse into the city’s Roman past.

This beautiful 11th-century church houses the Gold and Silver of Zadar, a collection of religious artefacts that includes a stunning Byzantine reliquary. The adjacent Benedictine monastery is home to a museum showcasing the history of the order.

Delve into the world of ancient glassmaking at this unique museum. The collection includes exquisite Roman glass vessels, jewellery, and other artefacts. You can even watch live demonstrations of glassblowing techniques.

Zadar’s imposing city walls and gates are a testament to its strategic importance throughout history. Take a walk along the walls and admire the views of the city and the sea. Don’t miss the Land Gate, a grand Renaissance entrance adorned with the winged lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice.
